Life In A Predominantly Non-English Speaking Country No 1

with 2 comments

So, I’m at the hairdressers today, sitting in the chair, looking particularly fetching with dye smeared all across my forehead when I begin to tune into the music playing in the salon. It’s some type of dancey electronica english language music and the lyrics say something pretty close to ‘there is power in my pussy’. I smile and wait for someone, anyone, to notice – no one does. I think ‘ok’ perhaps its a hard lyric to catch.

The next song comes on, I listen and this time the lyrics go something pretty much like ‘i want you to stand infront of me, look me in the eye and tell me you want me to fuck you. I want to fuck you like an animal’.* At this point I’m smiling and looking around the salon, trying to catch my boyfriend’s eye and wondering why no one else has noticed – I mean ‘fuck’ is a pretty easy to catch word – but nothing, no one bats an eyelid.

Now its a fairly posh salon, lots of society types who I’m sure would be mortified to hear the ‘f’ word said out aloud- let alone blaring out of the expensive salon speakers and this suddenly seems ridiculously laugh out loud funny to me. I later asked my boyfriend if he noticed. Nope, not at all.

* Not the Nine Inch Nails song.

** The boyfriend was there to prevent any dire hair mishaps by providing his much valued translation skills. Just another independence crushing moment.
